Deepwater is situated on the traditional lands of the Ngoorabul people (also Ngarabal) who have an ongoing connection with the local area. The Glen Innes Local Aboriginal Land Council manages around 10,500 hectares of land near Emmaville as part of the National Reserve System.

European settlers first occupied the Deepwater area in 1839, and it later became known for premium wool growing (along with timber and mining). In recent years beef cattle production has become more prominent, including prime black Angus. The nearby Rangers Valley cattle feedlot is the 4th largest in Australia, and known around the world for the quality of its beef products.
The township is a hive of creative activity with opportunities for art, sewing and quilting, pottery, live music, amateur theatre and more. We are also home to several published authors and a current journalist for a national newspaper. Let the fresh air and quiet countryside inspire your creativity!
